Thanksgiving Post
Firstly, happy Thanksgiving if you're reading this and I didn't talk to you yesterday. Hmm, what's happened in the past month. Let's start with school. The dynamics test sucked big time and I'll leave it at that. The physics test wasn't too bad, but I was still below the class average. Otherwise there's just been a lot of busywork. I officially agreed to work with Zhaoxia on her project on ensemble model verification of tropical cyclones. So I have a computer at work now! Unfortunately it's in the other meteorology building away from all the cool forecasting people. She submitted an abstract to the Tropical Meteorology Conference in Orlando at the end of April and wants me to give the presentation. However, that falls during final exam week, so I don't know how that will work out. I'm not sure when I'll officially start on it, although I'm hoping it won't be too much until after Christmas, since I will be super busy until then. I have a 20 page physics paper and presentation, physics test, the next part of the synoptic project (which will involve more MATLAB), a synoptic lab, dynamics homework(s), and then finals.
I went to my first Utah football game last weekend. I was afraid it would be a letdown after all my experiences at NC State games, but it really wasn't that bad. The part of the student section where we sat was definitely different though. Instead of rowdy, jumping around, cussing, drunk kids, there were sitting parents with their babies saying "dang it." Only in Mormon country.
My Thanksgiving was OK. I ended up going with my roommate to one of his friend's grandparents house. It was a good meal, but not enough southern style vegetables for my taste. It was also weird being with someone else's family, and made me really miss my own. Later in the evening we ended up at another grad student's apartment and watched movies. Unfortunately a majority of the rest of my break will be spent doing work.
Weatherwise, after seasonably mild weather, it has turned off cold. The past few days, highs have been in the 30's and lows near 20. No snow though, which is making all the skiers irritable. Speaking of the winter season, a lot of people started turning on their Christmas lights last week, which kind of made me mad. If you wanted to get them up before it got cold, that's cool, but don't turn them on until after Thanksgiving! The old fashioned giant lights (many colored) around the roof seem to be popular here. The hypothesis is that they will help melt snow off the gutters. I haven't seen many candles, wreaths, inflatables, etc, so will be interesting to see if more crop up as more people decorate.
A few sports notes. The Steelers need offensive linemen. NC State basketball seems to hang too close to lesser teams like they did last year. The big Utah-BYU rivalry game is tomorrow. Will be interesting to see if the Pack can pull off their final game of the season against Maryland.
