Accomplishments While Home

I recently spent a week at home in good ol' Southside Virginia. With my last two airline trips going off without a hitch, I was due for a major snafu, and I got one on the way home. A combination of routing changes, fuel issues, and thunderstorms in and around Minneapolis delayed my arrival in Raleigh from 5:15 until 9:00. Otherwise I enjoyed my time, and knocked out a lot of "non-Utah" things considering my short stay:

  • Ate dinner with two of my best friends (Casey and Lydia) at one of our old hangouts in Raleigh, and had a group phone call to a third (Kristin). Drank a Yuengling while there.
  • Enjoyed the hazy, hot, and humid weather... that's what summer is supposed to be like.
  • Ate a (North Carolina style) BBQ sandwich with cole slaw and Texas Pete hot sauce. Purchased at a BP station in rural northern NC.
  • Appreciated mom cooking for me and doing my laundry.
  • Knocked out three doctor/dentist appointments in two days.
  • Picked up some things at Food Lion, including Cheez Doodles that I brought back with me.
  • Joked around with a funny African-American bank teller.
  • Ate a cajun chicken fillet biscuit and seasoned fries from Bojangles for lunch.
  • Went bowling at the old smokey alley and realized my skills had gotten rusty.
  • Experienced two real thunderstorms (yes, Utah storms, on the rare occasion that they occur, are fake).
  • Went to church and sang the Doxology at the correct speed.
  • Enjoyed all the southern accents and hospitality.
  • Spent Father's Day with dad, mom, Kelly, Poo, Bob, Susie, Pa, and had grandmother and grandfather in from Pennsylvania for the weekend.
  • Got a haircut from Pa.
  • Ate a couple Jesse Jones hot dogs from Dairy Dell (I can't count on/don't trust Smiley's any more).
  • Took a walk in the woods at Staunton River Battlefield (I have yet to find "woods" in Utah).
  • Took my parents out to a "nice" dinner, which they don't do too often.
  • Realized again that the "country" is just as beautiful as any giant rocky mountain.

I took a few pictures, and I will upload those soon. Poo and Bob arrive in Utah a week from tomorrow! It's going to be a fast, busy summer!
