Lots of Little Stories
We'll try to go in increasing magnitude here...
My birthday was OK if not slightly mundane... but I guess that's how it goes as you get older. I went out with the gang to get Cookout milkshakes, so that was cool.
I helped out with Service Raleigh again this year. It seemed much better organized for some reason. We painted the poolhouse at the Ridge Rd. pool, so that was simple enough.
I had a follow up with the ENT doctor in Danville yesterday. The antibiotics had helped the cough, but didn't completely cure it. Let's not jump ahead, so first of all, I hope by being a meteorologist, I never really have to deal with rush hour, or never move to a place with bad traffic. I-40 wasn't too bad at 8am, but coming to near stops, then speeding up, then stopping really irks my nerves. It seemed like every car on southbound NC 86 yesterday morning had VA tags. Commuters, or just people wanting to go somewhere that actually had stuff? Got to Danville a little early, gas at Texaco noted at $2.47... did not buy. Doctor looked at me for like 2 minutes and then ordered a CT scan so we could "start ruling things out." So I go over to the digital imaging place, and wait for like an hour... it's about noon by this time. I go up to the receptionist and ask how long it's going to take, because I had to be back in Raleigh by 3pm for an NWS shift. She said 15 minutes, and they actually call me back then. But the man in front of me was having something tedious done to him, so I had to wait some more. I end up leaving around 12:45. Go across the street to Bojangles to scarf down some lunch, and get out of VA by 1:10... gas at same Texaco noted at $2.57... that's not cool, but I didn't have time to stop anyway, plus it was actually cheaper in NC! Between Danville and Yanceyville, some idiot was going about 40. Even though it's a 2-lane road, you could easily go 70... very straight and wide. Eventually the 6 cars in front of me get to pass, and all is cool to Yanceyville. Then I get behind a van... they're going 63, cool (no, I normally don't go more than 5 over, but I was in a hurry!). Then a little ways down the road, they drop down to like 53, and continue this seesawing all the way to Hillsborough... very annoying, and I don't have enough confidence in my Corolla to pass someone doing near the speed limit. Well I'm almost in Raleigh, time marginal but OK. Then traffic basically comes to a stop near the Wade. Ave. split. Maybe rush hour beginning, but probably the wreck on the other side of the road... making me more frustrated. I roll in here around 2:40, throw some khakis on, run back to my car, and make it to the NWS by 3:01. Probably didn't leave a good impression since head honcho Darrin Figursky opened the door... but oh well. Needless to say, after the shift, I was wiped.
Little old Nathalie, VA made it on the national stage, although it (nor South Boston) were mentioned by name. The owner of one of Martha Stewart's favorite nurseries flew her down to Halifax County to his (?) boxwood farm. On the way out, they stopped in Punk's Self Service. She bought one of his hams and some flour that had been ground at the Long Island (VA) mill. Good ol' Punk (aka Louis Stanley) actually goes to my church, and was my Sunday School teacher when I was a toddler. When we were kids, we'd go out to his store to visit and buy some treats, because spending money was cool then. So this was really awesome for me to see him and the store on TV. Last Sunday at church, people were asking for his autograph and joking around with him. He said Martha was gracious and down to earth... the redneck atmosphere must have worn off on her. He also made it on the local news... click here to see the story. I also have a video clip (wmv) from when it was on the actual Martha Stewart Show, so if you'd like to see that, let me know, and I can e-mail it to you.
