25 Random Things About Me
A popular "chain letter" going around Facebook right now, so I thought I'd copy and paste for non-Facebook readers:
Actually I'm not doing this to be cool or out of obligation because I was tagged, but rather as a challenge and life assessment tool. So here are 25 random things about me as I derived them in February 2009.
1. I have an abnormally amazing family that I love to death and hate being so far away from.
2. When I was little, I liked to play store. I got to do the real thing with my high school summer job at Smiley's Exxon. It wasn't always as fun when every customer wasn't Mom.
3. Also when I was little, I drew weather maps on notebook paper and pretended I was on TV. I made real weather maps (but still pretended to be on TV) on my undergrad internship at WXII-TV. I'm happy I decided to become a meteorologist, happier that I didn't try broadcast meteorology, but have no clue what kind of career path I will take (although hopefully closer to home).
4. I was scared of thunderstorms until I was in 5th or 6th grade. I would go out and sleep in the hall so I wouldn't have to see the lightning. Now I'm fascinated by them, although I sometimes feel guilty about getting enjoyment out of something that causes destruction. I have come to despise the high-based crap in Utah.
5. I've had some odd interests over the years: school buses, roads/highways, local TV news. However, I discovered there are significant online hobbyist communities of the latter two subjects.
6. I pooped my pants in kindergarten. It is still probably the most embarrassing moment of my life.
7. I grew up in a [moderate] Baptist church. I currently attend a [liberal] Baptist church semi-regularly. [loose designations because there are 291 flavors of Baptist] However, I don't know if my views on religion and worship would fit perfectly into any church or denomination.
8. I grew up in a county in southern Virginia with a population of 35,000 and one high school. I like where I came from and am OK with my southern accent that apparently comes out on certain words. Living in a city (even of moderate size like Salt Lake City) gets old sometimes and I like to get out to the middle of nowhere.
9. I enjoy homestyle food, probably because of my family's rural heritage. I'd rather go to a restaurant with a main course, selection of vegetables, and cornbread than a swanky steak and seafood place.
10. I despise the taste of dark chocolate. Most people have a look of shock on their face when I tell them this.
11. My first car was a 1981 Ford F-150... the same truck I learned to drive on with my great-uncle over hay fields and dirt farm paths when I was 5 or 6 years old.
12. I never left the Eastern time zone until my senior year of college. That was also the first time I flew commercially. My family was cheap and always argued about vacations, so we took the same beach and family-visiting trips every year.
13. While probably boring by most people's standards, I've had the most fun times in my life since I started college. I haven't made a ton of friends, but the ones I do have are good people.
14. I've had 7 roommates in the last 5 1/2 years (all 2-person living arrangements). However, none of them were bad or messy situations.
15. I feel like I've been on medication for something my whole life. It's the affliction of the "A" ailments: asthma, acne, acid reflux, allergies. Now that I no longer have prescription coverage, this problem should be taken care of.
16. I have often questioned my decision to come to grad school. I usually come to the realization that it will be worth something in the long run.
17. To use Facebook terminology, I've never been "in a relationship." Sometimes I'm OK with that, sometimes I'm not. But life is much bigger than that.
18. I want to get married, have kids, and live in a house with a yard. Call me old fashioned.
19. I have never had a pet. I wouldn't voluntarily get a pet. But I might be able to be convinced to.
20. I am perhaps a little too proficient at relating Seinfeld scenes and quotes to real life situations.
21. The Pittsburgh Steelers are my #1 sports allegiance (sorry, Wolfpack is #2). Highlights as a fan include attending training camp (literally 10 minutes from my grandparents' house) and Casey's Panthers-fans family inviting me to sit with them at a game in Charlotte. The Super Bowls were kind of cool too.
22. My mind wanders and ponders a lot. It is bad for my attentiveness, productivity, and occasionally causes me to worry about stuff I don't need to worry about. My mom says I get that from my dad.
23. While I have nothing against mobs of people and raucous parties, I usually would prefer to hang out with a few close friends. It's probably due to the fact that I've always been shy and quiet.
24. Compared to society, I feel disinterested in music and movies. I listen to random radio stations, watch movies on recommendation, and only own a handful of CDs and DVDs. It's not that I don't enjoy them, so I'm not sure what it is.
25. One of the things I hate most is waking up to an alarm clock.
