Pictureworthy Events
There's not too much exciting going on around here other than a dusting of snow a couple weekends ago. Research is moving along at a snail's pace, and classes/homework are eating a lot more of my time than I would like. I'm definitely looking forward to Christmas and next semester. However, the following three semi-interesting events have been represented by pictures on my Webshots page.
On the last weekend of September, I felt like getting out, so I went on a little hike by myself. I heard Mt. Aire (out of Millcreek Canyon) was short and simple, so that's where I headed. It was short, but due to that, it was also rather steep, meaning I had to stop a lot to catch my breath. Although temperatures were still in the 80's at that point, the leaves had started changing in the mountains, which added a little extra beauty to the scenery.
The student chapter of the American Meteorological Society went to the Utah-Oregon State football game on October 2. It was a night game, the weather was great, and the stadium was sold out, which made for a great atmosphere (although we were in the nosebleeds). On the whole, it was a rather boring and sloppy game by Utah... until the end. OSU scored with about 2:30 left to make the score 28-20. We got the ball back and subsequently scored a touchdown with about 1:30 left. The first 2-point try was batted down, but the defender was called for pass interference. Our quarterback ran it in on the second try to make it 28-all. OSU apparently wanted to go for the win, so on their possession, they threw two incomplete passes and then were forced out of bounds on third down. This meant we got the ball back with 50 seconds left. We marched down and set up a 37-yard field goal try with 2 seconds left. From my vantage point, I initially thought our top-ranked kicker pulled it left, but then everyone was going crazy. Eleven points in 89 seconds to win 31-28! Fans rushed the field even though we were ranked #15 and were favored to win... maybe because of the dramatic finish and because OSU beat #1 USC the previous week. At least they're passionate. Right now Utah is still undefeated and BYU lost last week, so our BCS hopes are still alive! Here's video of the play sequence... still pretty awesome and one of the best football games I've ever attended:

For Fall Break last week, six of us headed down to the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park (east-central part of Utah, about a 6-hour drive to our location) for a 3-day adventure. We stayed at a private campground just outside the park, and the manager appeared to be an old hippie and was really interesting to talk to. We did a hike each day, totaling over 21 miles for the trip. This left me with sore and blistered feet. But otherwise it was a lot of fun, and we got to see a lot of unique rock formations. Each hike was different and provided great vantage points of the desert's beauty. We didn't see a cloud the entire trip, but after the sun set, it quickly got cold, with lows in the upper 30's. Utah is definitely an interesting place to explore!
